Prospective clients often ask me to provide examples of how I handle unexpected situations. After all, as much as you plan every element of your wedding perfectly, things happen. I've seen just about everything over nearly a decade photographing weddings, and while I'm not at liberty to share some of the more scandalous situations, I certainly have the experience to handle whatever might come up.
So, here are six of the stranger things that have happened to me as a Vancouver wedding photographer.
1. I've Photographed a Proposal in the Middle of Nowhere
Scott flew me to Widgeon Lake (a short float plane flight North from downtown Vancouver) to photograph him proposing to Kate. I hid in the bushes and got eaten alive by mosquitoes, but she said yes! I regret nothing.
2. We've Shot an Amazing Photo Session in the Pouring Rain
Phoenix and Chris are troopers, and didn’t mind a little rain on their wedding day at the Celebration Pavilion at Queens Park. Neither did I – sure, we got wet, but look how amazing the photos turned out!
3. I've Fallen Down in Dog Poo During a Photo Session
Erin Gilmore invited me to second shoot, and while assisting her, I fell down in a huge pile of dog poo. Fortunately, with a litre of water and a whole package of wet wipes, I managed to clean it off before the reception! Erin was kind enough to grab this photo for posterity, which she shared on her Facebook page.
4. We've Shot Non-Stop for 18 Hours
Jaspreet and Sukhvinder’s Vancouver Sikh wedding was epic, as they combined their ceremony and reception into a single day. After starting at 7am and finishing at 1am (the following day), we were certainly tired. But it was totally worth it.
5. I've Shattered a Lens During a Wedding Reception
I accidentally bumped my camera off a table during Kelsey and Chris’s wedding reception at the Vancouver Golf Course, which broke the lens. It was no big deal, as I always carry plenty of backup equipment, and I got the lens fixed later. For some reason, I never took a photo of the broken lens!
6. All Those Times When We Only Had a Few Minutes for Photos
Sometimes, weddings run behind schedule and we have to shorten the photo session. It happens, and I’m used to it, so I can always squeeze lots of great photos out of a little bit of time.
